Santos Leading Colombia towards Prosperity for All?
Colombia Solidarity Campaign London Briefing Meeting
7pm Tuesday 15 November
The Apple Tree pub, 45 Mount Pleasant, WC1 (Russell Square, Farringdon, Kings X or Angel tube)
Speakers: Report back from delegation to Cajamarca plus briefings from Colombian guests
Like his predecessor, Colombia’s president Santos is coming to the LSE seeking endorsement for his pro-business regime. Although his style is different to Uribe, the substance of Santos’ core policies is very much more of the same. This is especially true in the case of mega mining projects, which Santos has prioritised as a locomotive of the economy. There are already a quarter of a million Colombians being driven off the land every year. Big mining will uproot even more campesino, indigenous and Afro-descendent families; and it will leave environmental devastation in its wake.
Prosperity only for a few; destruction, displacement and destitution for the many. This is what is at stake in the fight to stop La Colosa, an open cast gold mine project of Anglo-Gold Ashanti.
NB The LSE event is free, however a ticket is required. One ticket per person can be requested immediately after 10am on Monday 14 November, by logging on at http://www2.lse.ac.uk/home.aspx.
